The Butlers knew exactly the kind of open plan three-bed detached house they wanted in leafy Bramhall. But they kept getting gazumped. So they bought a house with a dark higgledy piggledy extension, with three poky little rooms, at different floor levels and nowhere to put the dining table
We project managed the build to the structural engineer’s specifications – calling in contractors when needed, to save the Butlers having to take time off. We dug 1.5m down to fix the steel columns in. While we were waiting for the steel to arrive, we replaced the old central heating system, sank the water pipes in the walls, and upgraded the cavity wall insulation. We also lightened up the space with three Velux roof windows and some 2.4m wide aluminium patio doors [compared to the previous window of 1.5m]. Then we craned in a 6.5m long rolled steel joist (RSJ) using two Genie winches. We knocked down the walls and installed the steel, levelled the floors and got the wallpaper stripped and the kitchen fitter in CHECK.
Now the Butlers’s kitchen is a feast of light and glass. Their L-shaped sitting room, kitchen and diner, leading out into the garden are the envy of friends and family – so much so that next door called us in to do a similar job on theirs. But that’s another story…
“It’s made a massive, massive difference. We now have a space that we want to come back to at the end of the day. It’s nice to have people sitting at the dining table while you’re cooking and you can speak to them. The whole house feels so much bigger and airier now.”
